Get Organized for the New Year

One of the most common New Year’s resolutions is to get the home more organized. Why? Research reveals that on average we waste almost 50 minutes a day looking for things we’ve misplaced. It clearly pays to get organized because time is one commodity we can’t recover.

However, getting organized can feel overwhelming. So here are some tips on getting started.

Schedule the Time to Organize

Plan this project like any other appointment. Write it on your calendar! If you don’t plan the time, it’s too easy to put it off until another time.

 Start Small

Trying to organize your entire house in a week is very enthusiastic, but unrealistic.  Start with a space that’s an organizational priority, or simply choose one closet or even a drawer.

Clear the Clutter

In each room remove items no longer needed. Place them in piles for donating, recycling, or tossing away. Then make a list of organizational items you need, such as additional shelving or cabinets in the laundry or children’s rooms.

Straighten Up the Garage and Front Door Entry

One of the most important areas of the house to keep neat is entrance to your home. If you always enter and exit through disorder, you’ll carry that clutter — emotionally and physically — into the rest of your home and out into the world. Having a clean entryway and garage flows into the rest of your home and life.

Organize Your Closet

Having an organized closet will save time getting dressed, on average it will save 10 minutes each morning. To help you get organized, invite a friend over so it feels more celebratory as you decide what items to keep, donate or toss. Then organize clothes by style, color, and season so everything cane be seen at a glance. Add shelving so shoes can be easily seen. Install belt or scarf racks to end the search for disappearing accessories. If your closet is a wire system, consider investing in an affordable, custom-designed closet to maximize available space. A custom closet adds 30% more storage space than wire shelving or do-it-yourself kits.

Stay Organized

Keep everything in order by spending just 15 minutes a day decluttering. An organized home reduces stress by also decluttering your mind so you can focus on the important things in life.
